Those who were old enough went to see “Footloose” and “Indiana Jones” in the cinema. The world was dancing to Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and Van Halen’s “Jump”. The year 1984: the Olympic Summer Games were held in Los Angeles, Prince Harry was born – and Deuter launched a new backpack range that was to revolutionize the market and save the brand. 30 years ago Deuter invented the Aircomfort back system and introduced the models as “airbag backpacks” to the market. It was the first ventilated back system worldwide. Today we are extremely proud of this anniversary. Our classics “Gröden” and “Zugspitze” are still part of our collection – and of course, many of our other ranges and back systems have been inspired by our Aircomfort.

To be honest, Deuter went through many highs and lows over the past 120 years. In 1930 we developed the legendary Tauern backpack – a bestseller for decades. Specific backpacks for skiing, climbing, mountaineering followed and were eagerly embraced by the athletes. But then came the 1980ies… a difficult decade for Deuter. The products were old-fashioned, sales declined. Until the product development team came up with the idea of a mesh back system, which would allow moisture to escape to all sides, prevent heat accumulation and thus help save energy. Retailers as well as users quickly appreciated the advantages of this unique construction. Sales figures increased tenfold in the first year! And this saved Deuter’s life. The Aircomfort brought back success. The construction was further refined and a team of mountaineers recruited to support the product development. We still work that way today: we strongly depend on the feedback of our athletes and mountain pros.
